Common Beetles in Idaho Falls

Eastern Idaho is home to several beetle species that property owners are likely to encounter. Knowing what you’re dealing with can help guide treatment.

Carpet Beetles

The varied carpet beetle is the most common carpet beetle species in Idaho. Adults are small, roughly 1/10 inch, with a mottled pattern of white, brown, and yellow scales. The black carpet beetle is the second most common; adults are dark brown to black and oval-shaped. In both cases, it’s the larvae that do the damage, feeding on natural fibers including wool, silk, and cotton. Infestations often go unnoticed until damage appears on carpets, stored clothing, or upholstered furniture.

Carpet beetles typically enter homes through open windows or on cut flowers brought inside. Once established, they shelter in closets, under furniture, and in stored textiles that aren’t disturbed frequently.

Bark Beetles

Bark beetles in Idaho Falls are generally most active from spring through summer. Species found in Idaho include the mountain pine beetle, spruce beetle, and western pine beetle. These insects bore through bark and establish galleries in the inner bark, feeding in the cambium layer, the living tissue just beneath the surface responsible for the tree’s growth. That feeding disrupts the flow of water and nutrients through the tree, causing decline and, in severe cases, tree death.

Early signs of bark beetle activity include small pitch tubes on the bark, fine boring dust or frass at the base of the tree, yellowing or wilting foliage, and branches that brown earlier than expected. Early identification matters: chemical treatments can be most effective when applied preventively or at the first signs of infestation. For heavily infested trees, removal may be necessary to help reduce the risk of spread to neighboring trees.

Lawn-Feeding Beetles & Grubs

Several ground-feeding beetle species, as well as their larvae (commonly called grubs), can damage turf by feeding on grassroots beneath the soil surface. Affected areas often show irregular patches of dead or dying grass that pull up easily because the root system has been severed.
