How to Recognize Aphids & Aphid Damage

Aphids are soft-bodied insects less than a quarter-inch long. Depending on the species, they may be green, white, black, brown, gray, or yellow. They tend to cluster on new growth and the undersides of leaves, where they pierce plant tissue to extract nutrient-rich fluids. Because they’re small and often hidden, infestations can escalate quickly before becoming visible. A single adult can produce up to 80 offspring in one week, which is why early detection matters.

Warning signs to watch for on your trees and plants:

• Leaves that curl, pucker, or appear misshapen
• Yellowing or dropping foliage, particularly on new growth
• Sticky honeydew residue coating leaves, branches, or surfaces beneath the plant
• Black sooty mold developing where honeydew has accumulated
• Unusual ant activity on tree trunks, which often signals honeydew-producing aphids feeding above

Species Common in Idaho Falls Landscapes

Spruce aphids are a recurring problem for evergreen trees in our region. They produce yellow patches on needles that eventually turn brown and drop, with populations peaking from late winter into early spring. Woolly apple aphids are recognizable by the cottony white masses they form on trunk wounds and branches, weakening trees through sustained feeding on limbs and roots.
